The Quantum Computing and Technology Course at FCTUC has already started

On September 17, the Quantum Computing and Technology Course at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) began, in collaboration with IBM and Softinsa.
The inaugural class featured interventions by Miguel Fonseca, councilor of the Coimbra City Council, Professor Edmundo Monteiro, responsible for the University of Coimbra’s Quantum initiative and director of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), Cristina Albuquerque, Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra, Professor Helena Vieira Alberto, Coordinator do Course, and do Professor Jorge Lobo, who presented the first curricular unit “Introduction to Quantum Information and Computing”.
From Softinsa, the IBM Quantum Ambassador, Bruno Januário, was present as a keynote speaker, who helped define the objectives and prepare the do program do course, and do José Ataíde, responsible for the dynamization of the Quantum initiative in Coimbra, under the protocol of development celebrated between the Coimbra City Council, the University of Coimbra, IBM Portugal, and Softinsa.
This course has had a great acceptance in the academic world from the beginning, and immediately after the opening of registrations, the 45 available places were filled, leaving candidates on the waiting list.
The curriculum includes an initial training on the subject at the higher education level, followed by advanced training in case studies in quantum computing and technologies, with very varied training offers, adapted to different target audiences (students, researchers, and teachers linked to universities; company members, public sector decision-makers), in post-work hours.
In addition to acquiring general knowledge in quantum computing and technologies, the course also aims to develop skills with application in business case studies, proposing new solutions for the market, using the knowledge and quantum computers of IBM and emulation in a High-Performance Computing (HPC) environment.
IBM Portugal and Softinsa make available to academia, companies, and society the new knowledge and technology in Quantum Computing that results from IBM’s R&D and Innovation plan, with a strong impact on training, creating ecosystems of companies and researchers, and creating solutions for the market.
